Eagle Pass, Texas – In a devastating incident on Friday night, a woman and two children lost their lives while attempting to cross the Rio Grande near Eagle Pass, Texas. The tragedy unfolded as U.S. Border Patrol agents were allegedly barred by Texas National Guard troops, acting under the orders of Governor Greg Abbott, from responding to a distress call from the Mexican government.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed the deaths, revealing that Border Patrol agents were made aware of the migrants’ distress but faced physical obstacles preventing them from entering the area. The situation has sparked a blame game between federal and state authorities, further aggravating an already tense situation on the southern border.

U.S. Representative Henry Cuellar, a Democrat from Texas, brought attention to the incident, stating that the deceased were part of a group of six migrants in distress. Cuellar accused Texas officials of obstructing Border Patrol’s efforts, claiming that even emergency access was denied.

However, the Texas Military Department countered these allegations, asserting that its personnel had actively searched the area but found no distressed migrants. The department claimed that the incident occurred on the Mexican side of the river and did not require their assistance. The conflicting narratives have deepened the controversy surrounding the tragic event.

Governor Abbott’s office did not immediately respond to requests for comment, adding to the complexity of the situation. The ongoing legal battle over access to the border in Eagle Pass, with Texas maintaining control over the area, has escalated tensions between the state and the federal government.

The Justice Department informed the Supreme Court that Texas had obstructed Border Patrol’s ability to respond to emergencies in the disputed area, further fueling the conflict. The state’s actions, including the erection of concertina wire and fencing, have impeded federal law enforcement’s ability to patrol and survey the border.

As the tragic incident unfolded, a White House spokesperson condemned Governor Abbott’s actions as “cruel, inhumane, and dangerous.” The dispute over jurisdiction has not only hindered the response to emergencies but also raised concerns about the overall care for migrants in distress along the border.

The victims, part of a group of Honduran migrants, faced harsh conditions in the mid-40s Fahrenheit temperatures. Two others were rescued with hypothermia by Mexican officials, who are now working to identify the deceased. The incident sheds light on the challenges faced by border communities and the consequences of the ongoing jurisdiction dispute.

As the nation grapples with the repercussions of this tragic event, questions arise about the need for a resolution to the jurisdiction battle and ensuring that emergency responses are not compromised amid political disputes. The deaths serve as a poignant reminder of the human cost in the ongoing struggle over border control.
