Deepfakes are the use of Artificial Intelligence to manipulate the audio or imagery of a person so that they appear to be doing something else. This type of technology can be harmful because altering videos and images impairs people’s perception of different topics. In extreme cases, deepfakes can be used to modify political statements of imperative figures and incite violence. The unethicality of deepfake Artificial Intelligence prompts the question of how the government will combat the forthcoming issue of determining whether something was created by robots or a genuine action.
With increasing popularity and necessity, Artificial Intelligence is used around the globe.
With more and more people using Artificial Intelligence in their daily lives, the misuse of
Artificial Intelligence comes into question. Due to technology’s increasing realism, it is difficult to tell between deepfake videos and real ones which can spark mass hysteria and conflict. This is seen when a video of the president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, circulated through the media. The 2022 video included him ordering for a ceasefire on Ukraine’s behalf in the war between Russia and Ukraine. This helps display the manipulative concerns of Artificial Intelligence as it could intensify rivalries between counties and mislead citizens and other diplomatic leaders.
The manipulative aspects of deep fakes prove that people should know basic regulations and repercussions when using Artificial Intelligence. It commences the question: who is behind the screen, and what are their intentions.
Researchers from Frontiersin.org highlighted that “In recent years, there has been an increase in discussions about the feasibility, design, and ethics of lethal autonomous weapon systems (LAWS). These machines combine Artificial Intelligence’s vast autonomy with the power to kill and harm humans.” This raises significant concerns about the potential misuse of technology, which can lead to safety risks. The ability of artificial intelligence to cause harm is one of the most alarming threats that could soon become a reality. As deepfake technology is rapidly advancing and being mass-produced, the prospect of new systems that can take lives challenges the ethical principles that guide society. Not only does this violate fundamental human rights—such as the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness—but it also places millions of people in danger. This situation highlights how a single disruption could dramatically alter the course of life. The use of AI as a weapon is already occurring in countries like the US and China, emphasizing the importance of warning the younger generation about ethicality and ways to safely use technology. As AI technology continues to evolve, similar to the rapid advancements of the last century, questions about its future become even more pressing. Deepfake technology’s development raises concerns about its reliability, particularly with the numerous safety issues involved.
Ultimately, the misuse of Artificial Intelligence poses a threat to younger generations, due to the profound moral implications it carries. While it serves many purposes for different people, it is crucial to consider the motives behind its use to ensure it is being used responsibly.
