On Sunday, President Biden hosted a large fundraising event, dubbed the “largest ever Democratic fundraiser,” with an impressive guest list including a myriad of A-list celebrities such as George Clooney and Julia Roberts. Along with the $30 million Biden claimed the event raised, he and others issued a grave warning about the threat and unprecedented nature of a potential second Donald Trump term as President.
Biden also touched on the “political violence” that Trump signalled could erupt if he does not win the election, quipping that, “Institutions matter. What he did on January 6th, and now he’s literally saying if he doesn’t win there’ll be a bloodbath. It’s outrageous – what he’s talking about is outrageous”. Biden later fiercely criticised the retribution that Trump threatened if he does not win, acting bewildered at the behaviour of such a figure in a country like the United States.
First Lady Jill Biden was quick to the support of her husband, who she claimed, “honors the rule of law instead of trying to bend it to his own will”. She further condemned Trump as someone who cared only about themselves and suggested he was not ready nor suitable to run one of the most influential countries in the world.
The Hollywood fundraiser comes as polls show Biden and Trump are in an effectively deadlocked race that both men have struggled to influence. In fact, polls show that few voters want a rematch of the two in the election, both of whom have served in the White House and seem to have their respective weaknesses. On the one hand, Biden’s age, his senile nature and his perceived cognitive decline have been an important factor with many indicating that these traits are impacting his ability to effectively perform presidential duties. On the other hand, Trump’s divisive rhetoric and current legal challenges raise concerns about his suitability and ability to unite the nation.
